CHAI HU JIA LONG GU MU LI WAN

aka Bupleurum, Dragon Bone, and Oyster Shell formula

CHAI HU LONG GU MU LI WAN is used when serious Liver Qi Stagnation (from emotional constraint in the chest), has caused so much Heat in the Heart, that the SHEN (spirit), residing in the Heart, seeks to flee.  CHAI HU LONG GU MU LI WAN contains  mammoth bone (LONG GU) and oyster shell (MU LI) to anchor the SHEN. These heavy mineral herbs help ground the patient when Liver Qi Stagnation creates Liver YANG rising to the head causing headache, neck and shoulder pain, sleep problems, and a manic disposition or episodes of manic activity.

Oyster shell and fossil bone are rich in calcium and other heavy minerals. These stabilizing herbs are included in formulas to treat conditions that would be described today as psychosis. Though there's nothing actually in ancient texts about schizophrenia, there are references to delusional behavior, muttering to oneself, and hearing voices inside. To TCM doctors, this behavior shows that the SHEN (spirit), under great duress, has flown. Anchoring herbs are then required to settle the agitated spirit.

Oyster shell and fossil bone are considered heavy stabilizing agents that are said to anchor the fleeing spirit Many of these substances are given only for short periods of time, as long term use might damage the QI.
