Chinese Herbs for Hemorrhoids

Causes of Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are caused by one or more of these factors:

Stagnation and heat in the Large Intestine
Prolapse of Qi (energy looses its lifting quality)

The treatment or cure for Hemorrhoids is to discover and eliminate the reason for intestinal heat or stagnation. Common causes include an excessively stimulating diet, poor eating habits, stagnation or constipation, heat pathogens, and emotional constraints.

Some Herbs Used To Treat Hemorrhoids

HUANG QI (astragalus root) for prolapse
DI YU (sanguisorba root) for rectal bleeding

Note that these herbs, taken alone will not be nearly as helpful as herbal products for hemorrhoids, which are made with potent combinations of herbs.

Acupuncture Treatments for Hemorrhoids

Acupuncture can be of some use in relieving the symptoms of stage 1 and stage 2 hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids that have progressed to the 3rd and 4th stages usually require banding, freezing, or surgical intervention.

Of course treating specifically according to proper pattern identification is necessary along with the following recommendations.
Common acupuncture points used in the treatment of hemorrhoids include:

BL 32 (ciliao)
Du 1 (changqiang)
BL 35 (Huiyang)
BL 57 (Chengshan)
Erbai (extra)

The Taiyang Bladder meridian has branches that connect with the anus, the points above regulate the Qi of this meridian and remove the Blood Stasis. Also, on either side of T7 there are particular hemorrhoid spots, these along with the lumbar-sacral region can be 7 star needled once every 7 days.

Ear acupuncture: lower region of rectum (anus), Large intestine, Shenmen, brain, Spleen. Needles are retained for 20-30 minutes. Treatment is given everyday. Moxibustion can also be administered when it is not contraindicated with the pattern.
