Hemorrhoids are actually blood vessels in the anus that have become swollen or engorged. There are two kinds of hemorrhoids, internal and external.
TCM treats them differently. External hemorrhoids appearing on the rim of the anus are usually considered Excess in nature and are caused by Heat And Blood Stagnation In The Large Intestine. Herbal formulas for these usually include Blood Breakers to break stagnations and relieve pain, as well as Blood Vitalizers that promote blood flow to reduce swelling.
Internal hemorrhoids, on the other hand, are caused by a weakening in the Qi's ability to lift the organs. This causes the valves in these veins to prolapse, causing blood to pool in the veins.
