LING ZHI (Ganoderma Lucidum)

The name lingzhi means spiritual potency and immortality. Among cultivated mushrooms, G. lucidum is unique in that its pharmaceutical value is esteemed more than it's culinary value.

LING ZHI (REI SHI) is available in powders, tablets, and whole for decoctions. Health benefits of lingzhi are said to include improvement of blood glucose levels, enhancement of the immune system, hepatic protection, and more.

These health benefits are based largely on anecdotal evidence, however, recent research is providing scientific evidence to some of these claims.

Some Research Conclusions on Rei Shi and Cancer

• Polysaccharides in reishi showed antitumor and immunostimulating activities
• Triterpene compounds may inhibit tumor invasion and tumor metastases
• Induces natural killer cell cytotoxicity against some cancer cell lines by activating cytotoxic receptors
• Reishi polysaccharides increase expression of histocompatibility molecules on melanoma cells, resulting in enhanced antitumor cytotoxicity
• In ovarian cancer cells, reishi induced G2/M phase cell cycle arrest, activated caspase 3 to induce apoptosis, increased p53, and inhibited Akt expression
