BI YAN PIAN is one of the most trusted remedies in the TCM pharmacopeia. It's chief ingredient is Xanthium, known as CANG ER ZI in Chinese medicine texts. The English plant name is cocklebur. Though it is often used for nasal congestion and runny nose due to common Wind-Cold, the use of xanthium in the formula makes BI YAN PIAN most useful for nasal conditions due to allergies. CANG ER ZI (xanthium seed) is one of the principle herbs used for allergies. It appears to relieve allergic sensitivity in many people. CANG ER ZI is also widely used to reduce itching.
Two other herbs in the formula are used as decongestants. Magnolia bud (XIN YI HUA) and Angelica dahurica (BAI ZHI), combine with the xanthium to create a powerful nasal decongesting effect.
Though BI YAN PIAN contains several herbs that Clear Heat, anecdotal reports about it's effectiveness for sinus infections are mixed. It can easily be combined with stronger heat clearing herbal products such as GAN MAO LING or ZONG GAN LING in cases of inflammation or infection.
Chinese herbs can be used together with pharmaceutical antibiotics, both to boost effectiveness and to reduce the chance of reoccurrence. To do this, the pharmaceutical drug and the herbal drug are taken together. When the course of antibiotics is finished, the herbal medicine is continued for about a week.
