Gentle Senna for Constipation
The name 'Gentle Senna' may be misleading, because there is nothing gentle about the herb Senna (FANG XI YE). Senna is classified as a harsh purgative. The formula also contains rhubarb rhizome, DA HUANG, also a harsh purgative. This potent combination of FANG XIE YE and DA HUANG is like taking dynamite and will work for overnight for most any kind of constipation. Use this formula strictly for occasional constipation, do not use Gentle Senna on a daily basis for chronic or recurring constipation. For longterm chronic or reoccurring conditions consider formulas that may be gentler than Gentle Senna such as Dr. Shen's Rhubarb Rx.
Note that internal "heat" is often associated with constipation, as heat can have a scorching and drying effect on the intestines. Dryness in the intestines causes or worsens constipation. All stagnations, including stagnation of food in the intestines, will eventually create friction which instantly generates heat, leading to more dryness and worsening constipation. An effective herbal strategy for longterm use is to always include herbs that Tonify the YIN and generate fluids such as MAI MEN DONG, SHU DI HUANG, BAI SHAO and DANG GUI.
