Health Concern's Backbone Pills, formerly Backbone 90, is a wide-spectrum tonic to support people having low back pain.  Though it strongly tonifies Kidney YANG, with herbs such as BU GU ZI,  XU DUAN, TU SU ZI, ROU CONG RONG, and most importantly GOU JI and DU ZHONG, it also contains SHU DI HUANG, and GUI BAN, which fortify the YIN and Blood but are commonly used for low back pain stemming from Kidney YIN deficiency.  Backbone also contains Blood Vitalizers like DANG GUI WEI, HONG HUA, and MO YAO to relieve pain, and finally WU WEI ZI to astringe the Kidney, and allow the QI to collect.

When Not to Use BACKBONE: Safety Cautions and Side Effects

Do not use for upper back pain. Much upper back pain is due to an excessive build-up of QI in the head, neck, and shoulders.  Adding stimulating YANG building herbs such as those in Backbone Pills could, at least theoretically, exacerbate upper-body pain.  

This is a potentially stimulating formula.  Do not use with fever or excess heat conditions.  Use cautiously with deficiency heat conditions.
