Notoginseng (San Qi, 三七,田七) has been used in china for thousands of years.
the classical formulary "Supplements to Compendium of Materia Medica", says that San Qi  replenishes qi, and nourishes blood.

San Qi Uses 

  • Controls bleeding
  • Removes blood stasis
  • Reduces swelling and pain

Use between 3 and 10 grams of sliced, dried root.  San qi may be boiled and drunk as a decoction, applied directly to the skin, or mixed with oil or petroleum jelly and applied as an ointment.
