How to Take SHAO YAO GAN CAO (SAN or TANG)

Granules: 2-4 grams, taken 2-3 times a day, or as prescribed.  Dissolve in liquid. Best taken on an empty stomach

Whole Herbs: Using a container made of ceramic, glass, or stainless steel (no aluminum, iron or copper) slow boil 2-6 grams of Prepared FU ZI in 3-4 quarts of water for about 60 minutes.  After the FU ZI has boiled for 30 minutes, add the package of BAI SHAO, ZHI GAN CAO.  

Continue boiling for the remaining half hour.  Adjust flame so that approximately 2 cups of medicine remain after the boiling. Strain herbs.  Drink 1 cup upon arising in the AM, and the second cup after dinner or at bed time. Store herbal medicines in a covered nonmetallic container and refrigerate but do not freeze.

Note that: Dosages of herbal medicines are determined by by the nature of the pathogen, but also of the size and sensitivity of the person. As a general rule, doses of herbal medicines are much larger  than pharmaceuticals.  Where as, a daily pharmaceutical dose is usually less than 1 gram, herb decoctions usually require well over an ounce (28 gr) of whole dried herbs. Granules are concentrated 5:1 ( 5 lbs of herbs are used to make 1 lb. of granules)
