Corydalis Herbal Pain Reliever

Shen Clinic TCM Consultation

Formerly known as Yan Hu Suo Zhi Tong Pian

Modern pain management employs the use of  three classes of pain relieving drugs, NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, i.e.. Ibuprofen, Aspirin), Opioids (morphine, Vicodin) , and Acetaminophen (Tylenol). Each of these drugs employs a different mechanism of pain relief.

Corydalis (YAN HU SUO) offers a fourth biologic mechanism of relieving pain.  Since this mechanism is different from the others, Corydalis (YAN HU SUO) may be used safely in conjunction with any of the other pain relievers without causing a potential overdose.

According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), pain is caused by impaired flow of Qi and blood. Pain relieving Chinese herbs are thought to Move the Qi or Move the Blood to relieve pain. Mild to moderate pain is thought to be caused by Qi stagnation. This kind of pain may come and go or move from place to place within the body.  Blood stagnation, on the other hand, causes pain that is severe and usually fixed in one location. Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizome) is considered a Blood Mover.

Yan Hu Suo in TCM Invigorate the Blood, and also smooths the flow of QI, and thus alleviates both kinds of pain.

Yan Hu Suo works for wide range of different kinds of pain.  Next to opium, it is considered the strongest Chinese herb for relieving pain.

Two unique analgesic constituents are present in Corydalis. DHCB (dehydrocorybulbine) has been shown to be effective against thermally induced pain, inflammatory pain, and injury pain. I-THP (L-tetrahydropalmatine) has been shown to reduce pain as well.

Yan Hu Suo Pian also contains 3 other Chinese herbs, BAI ZHI (Angelica Dahurica Root), XIANG FU (Cyperus Rhizome), and CHUAN XIONG (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome).  These assistant herbs support the action of Yan Hu Suo.

BAI ZHI expels Wind to relieve pain in the head, sinuses, and upper body. Xiang Fu moves QI in the abdomen, and relieves menstrual pain. Chuan Xiong Invigorates the Blood, expels Wind and enhances the effect of the other herbs.
