What Your Heart Does According to Traditional Chinese Medicine
Understanding the Heart in Traditional Chinese Medicine
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Heart is much more than a pump that circulates blood. It is known as the "Emperor" of the body because it governs both our physical and emotional well-being.
The Heart has two primary functions. First, it moves the blood through the vessels, nourishing every organ and tissue in the body. Second, it houses the Shen, often translated as the mind, spirit, or consciousness. The Shen influences our emotions, memory, sleep, mental clarity, and overall sense of joy and purpose.
When the Heart is strong and balanced, we tend to sleep well, think clearly, enjoy emotional stability, and have a healthy, vibrant complexion. We feel calm, connected, and mentally sharp.
When the Heart becomes imbalanced, a wide variety of symptoms can appear. Common signs of Heart disharmony include:
- Palpitations or an irregular heartbeat
- Anxiety, nervousness, or excessive worrying
- Insomnia or restless sleep
- Vivid dreams or frequent waking
- Poor memory and difficulty concentrating
- Depression or emotional instability
- Dizziness and fatigue
- A pale or dull complexion
- Mouth or tongue sores
These symptoms may arise from conditions such as Heart Qi deficiency, Heart Blood deficiency, Heart Yin deficiency, or excess Heat in the Heart. Emotional stress, overwork, aging, chronic illness, and lack of restorative sleep can all weaken the Heart and disturb the Shen.
The Heart and the Shen in Traditional Chinese Medicine
One of the most beautiful concepts in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the relationship between the Heart and the Shen. The word Shen is often translated as "spirit," but it also includes the mind, consciousness, emotions, memory, and our ability to experience joy and connection with others.
According to TCM, the Heart is the home of the Shen. When the Heart is healthy and well nourished by Qi and Blood, the Shen has a comfortable place to reside. As a result, we sleep peacefully, think clearly, remember easily, and feel emotionally balanced and content.
When the Heart is weakened or disturbed, the Shen becomes restless. This can lead to symptoms such as:
- Anxiety and nervousness
- Insomnia or frequent waking during the night
- Vivid dreams or nightmares
- Poor memory and difficulty concentrating
- Restlessness or agitation
- Depression or emotional instability
- Excessive worry or feelings of being overwhelmed
